Description
Details
Investment casting generally involves the forming of an expendable pattern of wax, plastic, or frozen mercury in a die or mold, and then using the pattern to make a mold of an investment material. When the mold of investment material (refractory particles and a liquid) has set, the pattern is melted and burned out, or removed by a solvent. The desired part is cast in this mold.
Since the process requires one pattern for every casting, molds or dies must turn out patterns at the same rate as the castings are to be poured.
Parts made by this process, from simple to complex designs, require a minimum of finishing and can be held to close metallurgical specifications. Parts shown in are representative of current investment-casting designs. Castings weighing up to 25 lb, up to 20 in. long, and 5 to 6 in. wide are investment-cast.
Practically all ferrous and nonferrous metals, including hard-to-machine alloys, are cast by this method for both production and pilot runs. The general rules for the design of investment-cast parts are similar to those required by good foundry practice.
Variations in section thickness should be graduated and generously filleted. The depths of cored blind holes may not be more than twice their diameters: for through holes this ratio can be from 4 to 6. Minimum core thicknesses depend upon the alloy to be cast but should not be less than 0.020 in. for nonferrous metals and not smaller than 0.050 in. for high-temperature alloys.[1]
