Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine tools that have revolutionized the design process.
Lathes (Turning) The CNC Lathe is used primarily to generate cylindrical forms by removing metal with a single-point cutting tool moving parallel to the axis of rotation of the work which is held between centers. The workpiece generally consists of bar stock, castings, or forgings. Through the use of attachments and accessories other operations may be performed on it such as thread chasing, taper turning, contouring and reproducinng, drilling, borinng, milling and grinding. Control operations may range from manual to automatic.
Milling is a method of removing metal with a rotating cutter. The essential elements of a milling operation include a rotating cutter, workpiece, cutter holdinng device, workpiece-holdinng device, and a milling machine. A milling machine consists of sctructures and mechanisms the functions of which are to hold and drive a rotating cutting assemblage and a workholding assemblage in proper spatial relation. The milled path or surface is produces through the relative motion between the work-carrying and cutter-carrying components.
